Bengaluru Professor Booked For Calling Student Terrorist

Hyderabad, March 29: Bengaluru professor booked for calling Muslim student terrorist after police registered a case and the university suspended him. The incident occurred during a classroom session at a private university.

Police registered an FIR against Professor Muralidhar Deshpande. They invoked Sections 299 and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita. Moreover, the Girinagar police took suo motu cognisance after a video went viral.

The incident took place on March 24 at the Banashankari Ring Road campus. A student recorded the video, which later surfaced on social media. Therefore, authorities initiated action based on the footage.

According to the FIR, the professor targeted a Muslim student named Affan during class. He allegedly called the student a terrorist at least 13 times. Around 60 students were present during the lecture.

He also made several derogatory remarks in the classroom. For instance, he referred to international issues and made personal comments. As a result, students described the environment as hostile and humiliating.

Meanwhile, the university suspended the professor on the same day. It also announced an internal inquiry into the matter. However, reports claimed that CCTV footage from the classroom was deleted.

Some students who supported the victim also faced suspension. The official reason cited was talking during class. In addition, student groups raised concerns over the action.

The professor later submitted a written apology to the administration. However, he did not apologise directly to the student. The department head reportedly conveyed an apology on his behalf.

Student groups, including the NSUI, filed complaints. They termed the incident as religious hate speech and sought strict action. Consequently, the case has drawn widespread attention.
