  • Bharat Taxi cooperative model offers low fares for passengers
  • Bharat Taxi challenges Ola and Uber with zero commission

Bharat Taxi was launched on Thursday as a new government backed platform aimed at reducing the burden of transportation for daily commuters. With taxi services becoming a key part of everyday travel, the central government introduced Bharat Taxi to offer affordable and cooperative based travel services. Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah formally launched the platform after a successful two month pilot operation in Delhi and Gujarat. The service is now being made fully available across wider regions.

Bharat Taxi works as a cooperative platform where drivers are not treated only as workers. Instead, they are shareholders in the company. Therefore, they are referred to as Saraths. The model follows the cooperative principles of Amul. The company is registered under the Multi State Co operative Societies Act, 2002. This structure aims to give drivers greater control and financial security while also ensuring fair pricing for passengers.

Meanwhile, the government plans to expand Bharat Taxi services to major metro cities. These include Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai. The move is expected to provide an alternative to existing private taxi platforms. Bharat Taxi offers fares that are much lower than regular taxi services. Private companies like Ola and Uber charge commissions ranging from 20 to 30 percent of a driver’s income. However, Bharat Taxi follows a zero commission policy. As a result, drivers receive their full earnings.

The fare structure under Bharat Taxi is also designed to remain stable. Private apps often raise prices sharply during rain or peak hours. In contrast, charges under Bharat Taxi are fixed in slabs. The minimum charge for the first four kilometres is Rs. 30. From four to twelve kilometres, the fare is Rs. 23 per kilometre. For distances above twelve kilometres, the charge is Rs. 18 per kilometre. These rates are around 20 to 30 percent lower than those charged by private apps.

Later, officials noted that about three lakh drivers have already joined the Bharat Taxi platform. Passengers have often faced issues due to high commissions charged by private companies and rising fares. Bharat Taxi also offers accident insurance of up to Rs. 5 lakh to drivers along with family health insurance. Therefore, the initiative is expected to create strong competition for private companies and may push them to lower their commissions and fares.
