Bilkis Bano case: SC issues notice to Gujarat govt and Centre

On Thursday, August 25, the Supreme Court (SC) issued a notice to the Gujarat government and the Centre in response to a petition challenging the release of 11 men who were found guilty of r*ping Bilkis Bano during the post-Godhra riots in 2002.

Subhashini Ali, a member of the CPI(M) Politburo, Ravati Laul, a journalist, and Prof. Roop Rekha Verma all submitted a statement in the case.

According to its policy of remission, the Gujarati government freed all 11 of the prisoners on August 15. Legal professionals and proponents of women’s rights vehemently denounced their dissemination.

During the Gujarat riots in 2002, the 11 men were found guilty of gangr*ping Bilkis Bano and killing 14 persons.
