BIS Hyderabad Raid on Fake ISI Wire Unit

Hyderabad, Feb. 24 (Maxim News) : The Bureau of Indian Standards Hyderabad Branch conducted a raid at a cable unit in Cherlapally Industrial Area on February 23, 2026. Officials seized PVC wires and cables worth about Rs. 5 lakh. The unit was using fake ISI marks.

The team carried out the operation under the direction of P. V. Srikanth, Director and Head, BIS Hyderabad. Rakesh Tanneeru, Director, led the raid.

During the inspection, officers found more than 200 boxes of PVC insulated wires and cables. The products carried fake ISI marks. The unit stored and offered them for sale. Electrical household products fall under Quality Control Orders issued by the Government of India.

Therefore, BIS certification and a valid ISI mark are mandatory. However, the unit did not have a BIS license. Instead, it used a fake ISI mark and license number. This act violated the BIS Act, 2016. As a result, officials seized the stock.

Section 17 of the BIS Act bars the manufacture, sale, storage, or display of notified goods without BIS approval. The law prescribes strict punishment.

A first offence can attract up to two years in jail or a fine of at least Rs. 2 lakh. Repeat offences can draw a fine of at least Rs. 5 lakh. The fine can also go up to ten times the value of the goods. Moreover, the offence is cognizable. Therefore, BIS will start legal action.

So far, the Centre has made 769 products mandatory under Quality Control Orders.

Hence, no one can make or sell these goods without a BIS license.

P. V. Srikanth urged consumers to check ISI marks through the BIS CARE App. He also asked buyers to verify hallmarks on gold jewellery.

In addition, he advised manufacturers to obtain proper BIS certification. Consumers can report fake or missing ISI marks through the BIS CARE App. Officials said they will take action on such complaints (Maxim News)
