Hyderabad, Oct. 28: BRS leaders Sabitha Indra Reddy and Karthik Reddy were placed under house arrest on Wednesday ahead of the public hearing on the Musi Riverfront development project, triggering strong criticism from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS).
Police personnel from Madhuranagar police station were reportedly deployed outside the residence of BRS deputy floor leader P. Sabitha Indra Reddy in Srinagar Colony from 4 am. The restrictions were reportedly imposed to prevent the leaders from attending the public hearing.
Sabitha Indra Reddy questioned the police action, stating that the BRS had not called for any protest and that she had no plans to participate in a demonstration. She demanded an explanation for her house arrest and accused the state government of creating an Emergency-like situation by curbing democratic rights.
BRS Musi Hearing House Arrests Draw Strong Criticism
BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao condemned the house arrests of Sabitha Indra Reddy and Rajendranagar constituency in-charge Karthik Reddy, demanding their unconditional release. He described the action as undemocratic and compared the restrictions to those imposed during the Emergency.
Rama Rao alleged that the government was attempting to silence the BRS and prevent the party from supporting residents living along the Musi River basin who could face displacement due to the proposed riverfront development project.
He also criticised Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, alleging that the government was prioritising the Musi project over the problems faced by farmers. Rama Rao claimed that the government planned to divert Rs. 1.5 lakh crore in the name of beautification while farmers were struggling with drought and crop losses.
The BRS working president demanded compensation of at least Rs. 50,000 per acre for farmers whose crops had dried up. He accused the government of failing to provide adequate support to affected farming families.
Rama Rao further alleged that the Musi project could lead to the demolition of homes belonging to lakhs of families and claimed that real estate interests were being prioritised. He asserted that the BRS would continue its agitation until the alleged plan was scrapped.
The house arrests have intensified the political dispute over the Musi Riverfront development project, with the BRS questioning the restrictions on its leaders and raising concerns about the project’s potential impact on residents and farmers.
