BRS Turncoat MLAs Named Congress Municipal Poll Coordinators

Hyderabad: The Telangana Congress has appointed three BRS turncoat MLAs as coordinators for the upcoming municipal elections, intensifying political debate across the state. The decision comes days after the Assembly Speaker stated there was no evidence to prove defection charges against several legislators who had shifted allegiance from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS).

The appointments were announced on Thursday through official orders issued by Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee working president Mahesh Kumar Goud. The move places sitting MLAs who defected from the BRS in key organisational roles for crucial urban local body polls.

Arekapudi Gandhi, MLA from Serilingampally, has been appointed coordinator for the Nizamabad Municipal Corporation. Rajendranagar MLA T Prakash Goud has been given responsibility for Shadnagar municipality. Bhadrachalam MLA Tellam Venkat Rao has been named coordinator for Yellandu municipality.

The decision follows Speaker G Prasad Kumar’s recent order granting a clean chit to eight MLAs accused of defection. He ruled that there was no material evidence to substantiate the disqualification petitions filed against them. Among those cleared were the three MLAs now appointed as Congress municipal poll coordinators.

Out of ten legislators facing disqualification pleas, the Speaker disposed of cases against eight MLAs. However, proceedings are still underway against Station Ghanpur MLA Kadiyam Srihari and Khairatabad MLA Danam Nagender, according to Assembly sources.

As municipal election campaigning gathers momentum statewide, the elevation of BRS turncoat MLAs within the Congress structure has drawn mixed reactions. While the party leadership maintains that organisational strength is the priority, several local Congress leaders have expressed reservations over the prominence given to defected legislators.

Former minister T Jeevan Reddy has publicly objected to the party’s approach, particularly in Jagtial. He has opposed the decision to field candidates associated with defected MLAs and has been campaigning for Congress rebels contesting as independents.

Jeevan Reddy has also recalled past statements made by senior party leaders opposing defections, urging voters to respond through the ballot. Following these developments, the Telangana Congress is reportedly considering disciplinary action against him for alleged anti party activities.

The appointments of BRS turncoat MLAs as Congress municipal poll coordinators underline the party’s current electoral strategy as it prepares for closely watched urban local body elections across Telangana. (Maxim News)
