Mumbai, Sept. 19: A second year IIT Bombay student died by suicide hours after he was found using a mobile phone during an examination on Friday.
The student, identified as Sahil Wakode, studied Energy Science and Engineering. According to IIT Bombay, he uploaded the question paper to ChatGPT during the exam.
The institute said it did not initiate disciplinary action against Wakode. The instructor and Head of Department discussed the matter with him.
They counselled him and assured him that the incident would not affect his academic career. He then returned to his hostel room.
Later that evening, he was found dead in his room. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.
IIT Bombay Students Protest After Death
The IIT Bombay student death triggered a protest involving more than 400 students on campus. Students demanded transparency and answers from the administration.
Some students alleged that Wakode faced the possibility of disciplinary action. However, IIT Bombay said no disciplinary proceedings had been initiated against him.
The conflicting accounts have not been independently resolved. Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the death.
The institute said it was supporting Wakode’s friends, classmates and faculty members. It also said the appropriate authorities were examining the case.
Police personnel were deployed on campus as students continued their protest. The institute’s Director also held discussions with the protesters.
According to reports, the ongoing mid semester examinations were postponed following the incident.
The death was the third reported student death at the Powai campus this year, according to reports.
