Center Raised Its Hand In Nimisha Priya Case

Delhi/Hyderabad, July 14 (Maxim News): The Center has taken action in the case of Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya. She is scheduled to be executed in Yemen on the 16th of this month. However, a petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking immediate intervention by the Centre and issuing orders to negotiate with the government there to avoid the execution of Nimisha. A bench of Justices Vikramanath and Sandeep Mehta held an urgent hearing on this on Monday.

The Supreme Court asked the Centre how to pass the order in this case and who would follow it.  However, Attorney General Venkataramani clarified to the bench that they (the Centre) had done everything they could, that India does not have good relations with Yemen, but still they had written to the prosecutor there to postpone the death sentence, that blood money was the last resort, that all those discussions were private matters, they there would be no government interference in it, and that they were praying for everything to go well.

Justice Sandeep Mehta expressed shock at this. He said that it would be very sad if she lost her life.  However, he suggested to the AG to immediately investigate and contact him if there were any informal means.  The hearing in this petition was adjourned to Friday.
