Amaravati, May 30: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said the Telugu Desam Party’s decision to provide 33 percent political reservation for women has sparked a national debate and strengthened support for greater representation of women in politics.
Addressing party leaders and cadres, Chandrababu Naidu said the TDP has consistently promoted women’s empowerment and political participation since its inception. He expressed confidence that more political parties would support increased representation for women in elected bodies.
The Chief Minister’s remarks come amid growing national discussions on the implementation of the Women’s Reservation Bill and the proposed delimitation of parliamentary constituencies.
Chandrababu Naidu on Delimitation and Women’s Reservation
Speaking on the delimitation process, Chandrababu Naidu said states that successfully implemented population control measures should not face disadvantages when parliamentary constituencies are redrawn.
He noted that whether delimitation is based on the 2011 Census or a future census, some states could face challenges in maintaining their existing political representation.
To address these concerns, he proposed increasing the total number of seats in Parliament by 50 percent. According to him, such a move would ensure fair representation for all states without reducing the existing share of seats.
He further suggested that a significant portion of the newly created seats could be reserved for women, thereby advancing the goal of greater gender representation in legislatures.
Calls for Simultaneous Implementation
Chandrababu Naidu argued that the Women’s Reservation Bill and the Delimitation Bill should not be treated as separate issues.
He said meaningful political reform would be possible only if both measures are implemented together. According to the Chief Minister, linking the two reforms would help ensure balanced representation while expanding opportunities for women in politics.
He also observed that political parties and leaders who opposed women’s reservation in the past may reconsider their positions as public support for the measure continues to grow.
The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister said the Centre remains committed to pursuing both delimitation and women’s reservation reforms. He expressed hope that the proposed changes would bring significant transformation to India’s political landscape.
Political observers believe the debate over delimitation and women’s reservation will remain a key national issue in the coming years, particularly as discussions continue on parliamentary representation, federal balance, and women’s participation in governance.
