Child Trafficking Racket Busted: ₹6 Lakh for a Baby Boy, ₹4 Lakh for a Baby Girl
Hyderabad, March 20 (Maxim News): Hyderabad police have busted a major child trafficking racket that illegally brought infants from various states and sold them in the city. A total of 11 people were arrested last month, and based on their confessions, police have now arrested 9 more brokers and 18 parents who had purchased babies.
21 Babies Sold, 10 Rescued
During the investigation, authorities discovered that at least 21 children had been illegally sold, out of which 10 have been rescued. Efforts are underway to trace the remaining children.
Police revealed that Krishnaveni and Vandana, who were initially arrested, provided crucial information that led to the identification of the prime accused, Somu Amulya (29), an ASHA worker from Malakpet.
How the Racket Operated
Amulya allegedly played a key role in the illegal adoption network. She came in contact with Ismail, a supervisor at Malakpet Area Hospital, who inquired about people willing to buy children. When Ismail mentioned that his relative Sugunamma was looking to adopt, Amulya arranged a baby for him.
She then expanded her operations, connecting with Deepti and Kola Krishnaveni, who were already involved in child trafficking. According to police, Amulya illegally sold 8 babies, Deepti 10 babies, and Kola Krishnaveni 3 babies.
Babies Bought and Sold Across States
Investigations revealed that the gang sourced infants from cities like Mumbai, Amravati (Maharashtra), Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh), Raipur (Chhattisgarh), and Hyderabad (Telangana). These babies were then sold in Kolkata (West Bengal), Chennai (Tamil Nadu), Bangalore (Karnataka), Hyderabad (Telangana), and Guntur (Andhra Pradesh).
The pricing structure of the illegal trade was as follows:
- Baby boys were bought for ₹4-5 lakh and sold for ₹6 lakh.
- Baby girls were bought for ₹3 lakh and sold for ₹4 lakh.
Shocking Revelations: 25 Babies Sold
Police initially believed that the Kola Krishnaveni gang had trafficked only four babies, but further investigation revealed they had illegally sold 25 infants. The racket came to light about a month ago when the Rachakonda Malkajgiri SOT and Chaitanyapuri police intercepted a sale in Chaitanyapuri and rescued four babies.
After re-interrogating the arrested suspects, police uncovered evidence of 21 more illegal adoptions, prompting them to rescue 10 additional babies. So far, a total of 14 children have been saved, while police continue efforts to locate 11 more infants.
Arrests and Legal Action
On Wednesday, police arrested the following individuals:
- Key accused: Amulya, Vaishali Bheem Rao, Janapalli Karthik, Sajjan Agarwal, Banala Mangayya, Bodasu Nagaraju, Ramaram Ashok, Sheikh Ismail, and Macharla Vamsi Krishna.
- Parents who illegally bought the children: 17 individuals.
Babies Sourced from Vulnerable Families
The investigation revealed that most of these infants were only two or three days old when trafficked. Agents targeted financially struggling parents, convincing them to sell their newborns. Authorities are also probing a possible kidnapping angle in the case.
Police Warning
The Hyderabad Police Commissioner has urged people to adopt children only through legal means and warned that buying or selling children illegally is a serious crime.
The investigation is ongoing as authorities work tirelessly to rescue the remaining infants and dismantle the trafficking network. (Maxim News)
