Chilkur Mrugavani National Park | Hyderabad, Oct 22: Rare traces from prehistoric times have been found in Chilkur Mrugavani National Park near Hyderabad. They include grooves believed to have been used to sharpen stone tools and ochre-coloured rock paintings. The finds have drawn attention to the historical importance of the area.
Four deep grooves were identified on rock slabs near the Banda Juvvi watch tower inside the park. Each is about a foot long and 2 to 4 inches deep. They are believed to have been used to sharpen stone tools and weapons for hunting.
Geological formations, natural valleys and water sources in the area are thought to have supported settled life for early humans, according to estimates.

About one kilometre from the watch tower, near the Forest Trek Park, a rare rock shaped like a snake’s hood carries distinctive rock paintings. A tortoise, hunting scenes and arrows are clearly visible in the artwork.
Historian Dyavanapalli Satyanarayana said the finds are strong evidence that humans lived in an organised society around Hyderabad thousands of years ago. He said he personally examined the grooves at Banda Juvvi. The age and significance of these grooves and the ochre paintings on the snake-hood rock must be established scientifically, he said.
A comprehensive survey, he said, would reveal Hyderabad’s historical roots to the world in a new light. Rangareddy district forest administrative officer Anand Kumar provided details of the area’s geography.
