Hyderabad, July 22: Tension prevailed near Gandhi Bhavan in Hyderabad on Tuesday after Congress and BJP workers clashed during rival protests, leading to police intervention and a lathi charge. A journalist sustained a head injury during the violence and was shifted to a hospital.
The Congress organised a protest rally condemning the arrest of party leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. At the same time, BJP workers staged a counter protest and attempted to march towards Gandhi Bhavan.
The confrontation escalated when workers from both parties allegedly attacked each other with sticks. Police intervened to control the situation and dispersed the protesters using a lathi charge.
Meanwhile, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Mahesh Kumar Goud led a separate protest in Hyderabad against the arrest of Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Police stopped Congress leaders from marching from the Indira Gandhi statue at Necklace Road towards Lok Bhavan.
Mahesh Kumar Goud, along with state ministers and Congress leaders, was detained by the police during the protest.
The BJP also attempted to march towards Gandhi Bhavan in response to the Congress demonstration. Police stopped the BJP workers, resulting in another confrontation between protesters and security personnel.
The situation was later brought under control, and police maintained security in the area to prevent further clashes.
