- Sudarshan Reddy named Advisor, Prem Sagar Rao to head Civil Supplies
- Party moves to pacify disgruntled MLAs ahead of local body elections
The Congress government in Telangana announced two key political appointments on Friday in an effort to manage internal dissent before the upcoming local body elections.
Bodhan MLA P Sudarshan Reddy has been appointed as Advisor with Cabinet rank, while Mancherial MLA K Prem Sagar Rao has been named Chairman of the Civil Supplies Corporation. The orders came just hours after former cricketer Mohd Azharuddin was inducted into the State Cabinet.
Both MLAs had earlier expressed dissatisfaction over being denied Cabinet berths. The appointments appear to be a strategic attempt by the Congress leadership to pacify restless legislators and prevent further discontent within the ruling party.
In June, when three MLAs were inducted into the Cabinet, Sudarshan Reddy and Prem Sagar Rao, along with Munugode MLA Komatireddy Rajgopal Reddy, publicly voiced their disappointment with the leadership and high command. To address the unrest, AICC incharge Meenakshi Natarajan and senior party leaders met Sudarshan Reddy to resolve the issue.
As per the new order, Sudarshan Reddy, a former Minister, will hold the rank and status of Cabinet Minister. He will oversee the implementation of flagship welfare and development schemes.
Meanwhile, Prem Sagar Rao, known to be close to Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, had earlier criticised the leadership for offering a Cabinet berth to Chennur MLA G Vivek Venkatswamy, who had previously joined the BJP. To win back his confidence, the Congress has now elevated him to lead the Civil Supplies Corporation.
Interestingly, the Congress government did not extend any new role to Komatireddy Rajgopal Reddy. He has remained vocal in his criticism of the government, particularly over issues such as urea supply to farmers and the implementation of Rythu Bharosa and other welfare programmes.
Speculation about his possible exit from the party recently surfaced, but Rajgopal Reddy dismissed the reports as fake. “A few Congress leaders were deliberately trying to malign my image in the party,” he said, adding that he would remain loyal to the Congress and abide by the high command’s decisions.
