Hyderabad, Aug.19 (Maxim News): TPCC Treasurer Gudur Narayana Reddy has strongly condemned BJP Government at the Centre and Prime Minister Narender Modi for adopting an ‘inhuman’ approach by not extending the required assistance to flood-hit Kerela.
“Kerela has suffered losses to the tune of nearly Rs. 19,512 crore in the catastrophic flood. As against the demand for immediate assistance of Rs. 2,000 crore for relief and rehabilitation measures, the Prime Minister has offered a mere Rs. 500 crore. This is nothing but ‘inhuman’ approach towards the victims of a devastating natural calamity,” Gudur Narayana Reddy said in a media statement on Sunday.
The Congress leader said so far more than 324 people are reported dead and thousands are still trapped in flood water. More than 2.25 lakh people are living in over 1500 relief camps while the entire Kerela State is facing severe shortage of food, drinking water and medicines. Instead of adopting a liberal approach in extending assistance, PM Modi is playing politics by deliberately delaying or denying the required help. “PM Modi is apparently trying to punish the people of Kerela who do not align with the hate agenda of BJP. This is completely unacceptable in a democracy. Modi must realise that he is the Prime Minister for the entire country and not just BJP-ruled States,” he said.
Gudur Narayana Reddy also slammed the BJP leaders for showering praise on PM Modi for walking 6-km in the funeral procession of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and then proceeding to Kerela for an aerial survey of flood affected areas. “Mahatma Gandhi walked hundreds of kilometres to bring independence for the country.
It is the duty of the Prime Minister to address a national disaster in any part of the country. There is nothing for PM Modi or BJP to boast about in visiting Kerela. Further, RSS has been making tall claims that thousands of Swayam Sevaks were participating in the relief operations while alleging that CPM and other party workers are seen nowhere. The BJP-backed media is carrying out this false propaganda to extract political benefits from this tragedy. Everyone, except the BJP and RSS, are trying to support Kerela by all means. Therefore, Modi should stop playing politics over dead bodies and perform his duties sincerely,” he said.
The Congress leader also expressed regret over BJP-ruled States not announcing any significant help to flood-hit Kerela. He said other non-BJP rule States including Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Punjab, Delhi and Tamil Nadu have already announced huge financial assistance to Kerela. He alleged BJP was resorting to political vendetta or at least discrimination even in the time of crisis. This trend is not good for a healthy democracy, he said.
Gudur Narayana Reddy supported the demand made by Congress president Rahul Gandhi for declaring Kerela floods as National Disaster. He said the Congress workers, from across the country, would extend all possible help to the flood-hit people of Kerela. “We will also not allow the BJP to manipulate a natural disaster for its own political gains,” he said.
