The verdict was delivered by the Chinsurah Court in Hooghly district, which found the accused couple — Krishna Baul Das and Lakshmi Roy — guilty and pronounced the quantum of punishment.

According to court sources, the victim, Mohammad Anwar, was found lying in a pool of blood in front of a shop in the Kantapukur area of Magra in Hooghly district on June 7, 2019. The 23-year-old, a resident of Notungram in the Magraganj area, was spotted by police personnel on patrol duty, who immediately rushed him to Mogra Rural Hospital. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival.

The next day, the victim’s maternal uncle, Ranjit Sau, lodged a murder complaint at the local police station, naming the couple as the prime accused. During the investigation, police located an eyewitness who stated that he had seen Anwar engaged in a heated argument with the duo shortly before the attack. Based on this testimony, officers arrested the couple, and a formal case was initiated.

Public Prosecutor Subrata Bhattacharya represented the plaintiff and recorded the testimony of 24 witnesses during the trial.

Investigators later revealed that Lakshmi had been demanding Rs 100 from Anwar, which had led to repeated disputes. During one such quarrel, Krishna allegedly attacked Anwar with a brick, inflicting fatal injuries. The couple then fled the scene but were later arrested.

On Tuesday, Additional District and Sessions Judge Sanjay Kumar Sharma pronounced the life sentence and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the convicts. The court also ordered a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to be paid to Anwar’s mother.

Sources said the victim’s family expressed satisfaction with the district court’s verdict.
