CP Sajjanar warns of WhatsApp DP scam; urges caution
Hyderabad, Oct. 25 (Maxim News): Hyderabad Commissioner of Police, V.C. Sajjanar, has issued a public alert about a new WhatsApp scam where fraudsters are using his photo as a display picture (DP) to send messages to his contacts and the general public.
He said these are fake, fraudulent accounts, and the messages are intended to deceive people into revealing personal details or sending money.
He urged citizens not to respond to such messages and to block and report the numbers immediately.
Sajjanar cautioned citizens to never share personal details with unknown contacts or those making unsolicited requests.
He said people should be especially wary of messages asking for money and should never transfer funds without verifying the identity of the person making the request through a direct phone call or in-person check.
He emphasized that public vigilance is the strongest defense against cybercriminals and reminded everyone that caution is the key to staying safe.
The Commissioner further advised that if anyone comes across these fake WhatsApp accounts, they should report them immediately to the Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930. He also directed citizens to file a formal complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at cybercrime.gov.in.
By reporting these incidents, citizens can help law enforcement agencies track down the perpetrators and prevent others from falling victim to the same scam.
This alert is part of a broader effort by the Hyderabad Police to raise public awareness about the ever-evolving tactics of cybercriminals. In recent weeks, the Commissioner’s office has issued similar warnings about fake RTO challan scams, online investment frauds, and holiday season e-commerce scams.
The recurring theme in all these advisories is the need for citizens to remain skeptical of unsolicited messages, especially those that create a sense of urgency or promise unbelievable rewards.
The impersonation of a high-ranking police official like CP Sajjanar highlights the audacity of modern cyber fraudsters. By using a trusted public figure’s identity, they aim to lower the guard of potential victims and lend an air of legitimacy to their fraudulent schemes.
The Commissioner’s direct and public warning aims to neutralize this tactic and empower citizens with the knowledge they need to protect themselves. The message is clear: trust your instincts, verify before you act, and report suspicious activity without delay. (Maxim News)
