Hyderabad: Former Australia opener David Warner has pleaded guilty to a drink-driving charge in a Sydney court. The former Australian cricketer did not appear in person during Wednesday’s hearing and was represented by his lawyer.
Warner’s legal counsel, Bobby Hill, entered a guilty plea to one count of mid-range drink-driving on his behalf. The court has scheduled August 18 for sentencing.
Warner Faces Driving Ban and Fine
The incident occurred on April 5, when Warner was stopped near a random breath-testing checkpoint in Sydney. Police alleged that he recorded a blood alcohol level more than twice the legal limit. Officers arrested him and took him to a police station for further processing.
According to his lawyer, Warner accepted full responsibility for his actions.
“He knows what he did was wrong. It was a reckless and foolish decision to drive instead of taking an Uber,” Hill told the court.
Warner had recently returned from Pakistan after leading the Karachi Kings in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) when the incident occurred.
Under New South Wales law, Warner faces a minimum six-month driving ban, a fine of up to AUD 2,200, and a maximum prison term of nine months.
The guilty plea has also raised questions over his position as captain of the Sydney Thunder for the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season.
Following Warner’s arrest, Cricket NSW said it takes the matter seriously and reiterated its commitment to promoting road safety and discouraging drink-driving.
