Hyderabad: Apple is expected to introduce a true variable aperture camera on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, making it one of the biggest upgrades in the company’s next-generation smartphones. The feature, highlighted in a new video by YouTuber John Prosser, could significantly improve photography by giving users greater control over lighting and depth of field.
The report claims the upcoming Pro models will feature a new main camera sensor with a mechanical variable aperture. Unlike software-based exposure adjustments, the technology allows the camera to physically control the amount of light reaching the sensor. As a result, users can create natural background blur and produce starburst effects around bright light sources.
Larger Batteries and 2nm A20 Pro Chip Expected
According to the report, the iPhone 18 Pro series is also expected to feature a smaller Dynamic Island, a thicker aluminium frame, and Apple’s next-generation 2nm A20 Pro processor. The new chipset, combined with larger batteries, is expected to deliver better performance and longer battery life.
The leaked battery capacities include 4,288mAh for the iPhone 18 Pro and 5,567mAh for the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Together, these upgrades could significantly improve battery endurance compared to the current generation.
The video also mentions Apple’s C2 modem. However, reports suggest the modem may not be available in US variants of the iPhone 18 Pro, indicating possible regional differences.
Meanwhile, the iPhone 18 Pro lineup is expected to launch in September 2026, with reports pointing to an announcement on September 8 or 9 at Apple Park in Cupertino. The devices are also expected to arrive in several colour options, including a new Dark Cherry finish, alongside Blue, Silver, and Dark Gray.
Although Apple has not officially confirmed these features, the variable aperture camera is widely viewed as one of the most significant rumoured upgrades for the iPhone 18 Pro series.
