DCA Seizes Overpriced Antibiotic Ointment: Raids Unlicensed Clinic
Hyderabad, April 21 (Maxim News): The Drugs Control Administration (DCA) of Telangana has seized an overpriced batch of ‘Teet-Bet Ointment’ (Mupirocin Ointment IP 2% w/w) at Uppal in Medchal-Malkajgiri District. Additionally, they raided an unlicensed clinic operated by a quack in Azmapur Village, Pedda Adisherlapally Mandal, Nalgonda District.

According to the Director General DCA, VB Kamalasan Reddy, On May 20, 2024, DCA officials confiscated ‘Teet-Bet Ointment’ from a medical shop in Uppal Khalsa. The ointment, manufactured by Zenith Drugs Pvt. Ltd. and marketed by Rhon-Poule Life Science, was being sold at Rs. 135 for a 5 gm pack, significantly above the government-mandated ceiling price.
According to the Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013, the ceiling price for Mupirocin Ointment IP 2% w/w should be Rs. 101.45 per 5 gm, with a maximum retail price (MRP), including 12% GST, capped at Rs. 113.62. The seized batch (Batch No. F414, Mfg. Date: 12/2023, Exp. Date: 11/2025) was overpriced by Rs. 21.37 per tube, violating the pricing order.

The raid was conducted by a team including Dr. V. Balanaganjan, Dr. B. Lakshmi Narayana, G. Indira Priyadarshini, B. Mounika, and P. Ambedkar. Further investigation will follow, with legal action pending against all offenders. The DCA emphasizes the importance of adhering to the ceiling prices fixed by the Central Government to avoid violations.
In a separate incident on the same day, DCA officials raided the premises of Bandi Saidi Reddy in Azmapur Village, Nalgonda District. Reddy, claiming to be a ‘Rural Medical Practitioner,’ was found practicing without proper qualifications and stocking a large quantity of medicines without a drug license.
Officials seized 42 varieties of medicines, including physician samples and expired drugs, worth Rs. 70,900. The unlicensed sale of antibiotics and other drugs by unqualified individuals poses significant health risks, including the potential emergence of antimicrobial resistance.

The raid was led by K. Dass, J. Ashwin Kumar, and Ch. Anil Kumar. Samples were collected for analysis, and further investigation is underway. Suppliers providing drugs to unlicensed practitioners will also face strict action under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, which mandates up to five years of imprisonment for such violations.
