Decentralised Water Management Seen As Key To Hyderabad Resilience
Hyderabad, Jan 23 (Maxim News): Decentralised water management has emerged as a critical requirement for Hyderabad’s long term urban resilience, speakers said at a stakeholder meeting organised by GHMC in collaboration with IGBC recently.
The meeting on water discharge, wastewater, and stormwater management was held at the CII Sohrabji Green Business Centre.
Officials and experts stressed that decentralised, source level water management is no longer optional for the city. Stakeholders stress decentralised water management.
GHMC Commissioner R V Karnan, the Managing Director of HMWSSB, the Additional Commissioner of GHMC, and representatives from CII IGBC participated in the discussions. Members from CREDAI, NAREDCO, UFERWAS, NGOs, and domain experts also shared their views.
Participants noted that every additional litre entering public drains increases flood risk and civic expenditure.
They emphasised that organised residential and commercial communities must act as active components of the water system rather than passive users.
Speakers highlighted that decentralised retention and reuse of water forms the first line of defence against climate related risks. Global examples from Singapore and Melbourne were cited to show that source level retention and reuse is the only scalable and sustainable path, aligned with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Several practical suggestions were offered on policy frameworks, challenges in STP operations, and the need for incentives to promote wider adoption of decentralised water management.
The Government of Telangana, GHMC, HMWSSB, industry bodies, and experts agreed to work jointly on clear and enforceable frameworks. The objective is to reduce pressure on public drains, protect lakes and nalas, and strengthen Hyderabad’s long term urban resilience. (Maxim News)
