Delhi: Kanhaiya Kumar to Join Congress

Posters welcoming former JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar have been put up outside the Congress office in Delhi ahead of his proposed joining.

According to party sources, Kanhaiya Kumar and Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani will join the Congress party today. Sources added that Rahul Gandhi will be present for the induction along with Congress leader Hardik Patel.

Initially, the induction was planned for September 27, which is the birth anniversary of Shaheed Bhagat Singh. However, farmers’ unions had given a call for a nationwide protest on the same day.

Earlier this month, Kanhaiya Kumar had met Rahul Gandhi, sparking rumours of him joining the party.

Jignesh Mevani, an independent Gujarat MLA, announced last week that he would join Congress on September 28 along with former JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar.

Jignesh Mevani had won election from the Vadgam assembly constituency in Banaskantha district in 2017 with the backing of Congress.

“On September 28, I will be joining the Indian National Congress along with Kanhaiya Kumar,” he told media, adding that he will be able to talk in detail about the decision only after that.
