Drug Busts in Hyderabad: Telangana DCA Seizes Illegal Drugs and Unauthorized Medical Devices

Telangana DCA | Hyderabad, March 8 (Maxim News): Hyderabad authorities took a strong stance against illegal drug distribution and unauthorized medical device sales through two successful raids conducted by the Drug Control Administration (DCA).

Targeting Illicit Drug Activity

The first raid, conducted in collaboration with the Excise Department, targeted a location in Mattampally Village, Suryapet District, suspected of illegally storing and selling addictive drugs at inflated prices. Officials seized a significant amount of codeine-containing cough syrups and nitrazepam tablets, both of which can be dangerous if abused.

The raid unearthed a worrying practice. Ramavath Ravindra Naik, a licensed pharmacist and owner of New Durga Bhavani Medical Stores, was found storing and distributing these controlled substances from his residence.

This stock included large quantities of cough syrups and nitrazepam tablets, which can lead to addiction, respiratory problems, seizures, and even death if misused. Authorities seized over Rs. 20,000 worth of drugs and traced their source to suppliers in Kodad.

Unauthorized Medical Device Sales

In a separate operation, the DCA raided MS Medical Systems in Tarnaka, Secunderabad. The establishment was suspected of selling nebulizers and steam sterilizers without a license, which is a requirement under the Medical Devices Rules of 2017. The raid resulted in the confiscation of medical equipment valued at Rs. 6.5 lakhs.

Public Health at Stake

These raids highlight the seriousness of illegal drug distribution and unauthorized medical device sales. These activities not only pose a threat to public health but also violate established laws. The Drugs and Cosmetics Act prescribes penalties, including imprisonment, for such offenses.

The DCA encourages people to report any suspicions or complaints regarding such activities by calling their toll-free number, 1800-599-6969 (operational during office hours).

Telangana DCA Commitment to Public Safety

V. B. Kamalasen Reddy, Director General of the DCA, released a press note emphasizing the department’s unwavering commitment to protecting public health and upholding regulations within the pharmaceutical and medical sectors. These raids demonstrate the DCA’s proactiveness in ensuring public safety.
