According to the National Centre for Seismology, the Earthquake in Delhi occurred at 8:44 am. The epicentre was located in North Delhi at a shallow depth of five kilometres. As a result, residents in several areas felt light shaking for a few seconds. However, authorities confirmed that the tremors were mild and did not cause panic or disruption.

The National Centre for Seismology shared official details of the Earthquake in Delhi in a statement. It said, “EQ of M: 2.8, On: 19/01/2026 08:44:16 IST, Lat: 28.86 N, Long: 77.06 E, Depth: 5 Km, Location: North Delhi, Delhi.” Officials also said emergency services did not receive distress calls linked to the tremor.

Earthquake in Delhi highlights ongoing seismic risk

Meanwhile, the Earthquake in Delhi once again highlighted the capital’s vulnerability to seismic activity. Delhi and the surrounding National Capital Region lie close to several active fault lines. Therefore, the region often experiences low to moderate earthquakes. Experts have repeatedly warned that even small tremors should not be ignored.

Geological conditions in parts of Delhi add to the risk. Areas along the Yamuna floodplains contain soft soil and shallow groundwater. As a result, seismic waves can intensify during stronger quakes, increasing damage risk. However, no such impact followed Monday’s tremor.

India updated its seismic zoning system in 2025. The new system classifies regions into six zones based on earthquake risk. Delhi remains in Zone IV, which falls under high risk areas. Several cities in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh also share this classification.

Earlier, in November 2025, a stronger earthquake measuring 5.7 struck Bangladesh’s Narsingdi district. Tremors were then felt across eastern India, including Kolkata. Experts say such events show how closely linked seismic activity remains across the region.
