Hyderabad, July 4: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed BRS MLC K Kavitha to change the name of her political party, Telangana Rakshana Sena, following objections that its abbreviation, TRS, could confuse voters.
The ECI has reportedly asked Kavitha to submit three alternative party names within 15 days. It also warned that the party’s registration application would be rejected if she fails to respond within the stipulated period.
Kavitha launched her political party at Medchal on April 25 this year under the name Telangana Rashtra Sena. However, she renamed it Telangana Rakshana Sena on April 28.
Before launching the party, she had submitted five proposed names to the ECI in February. They included Telangana Praja Jagruthi, Telangana Jagruthi, Telangana Rakshana Sena, Telangana Rashtra Jagruthi and Telangana Praja Shakthi. She later selected Telangana Rakshana Sena.
The Election Commission had earlier allowed the proposed name to be published for public objections. However, it clarified that final approval would depend on the objections received during the prescribed period.
According to reports, several objections were filed. The main concern was that the abbreviation TRS for Telangana Rakshana Sena closely resembles the former name of K Chandrashekar Rao’s party, Telangana Rashtra Samithi, which was renamed Bharat Rashtra Samithi in 2022.
