Delhi, Sept. 30: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has withdrawn the additional SIR declaration from online Form 6 applications in states and Union Territories where the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) has been completed.
The decision, announced on Wednesday, allows eligible applicants in these areas to register using the regular Form 6 without submitting additional SIR-related family details.
ECI Clarifies Form 6 Requirements During SIR
In areas where the SIR process is still underway, applicants must continue to provide the additional declaration. It requires details linking applicants or their parents and grandparents to previous electoral rolls.
The Election Commission clarified that it has not changed the statutory Form 6. The additional declaration applies only during the ongoing SIR process.
The decision follows objections raised by Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi over the additional requirements. The changes had prompted questions about the procedure for modifying the voter registration form.
The Commission subsequently clarified that the additional declaration would apply during the SIR period. It also decided to remove the requirement from areas where the revision has been completed.
The move is expected to simplify fresh voter registration in those areas, particularly for young applicants who may not have access to their families’ previous electoral records.
Eligible applicants can continue to use the Election Commission’s voter services portal to submit Form 6 for new voter registration.
