Custard Apple Prices in Hyderabad | Hyderabad, Oct 17: Custard apple rates have surged across Hyderabad as reduced rainfall and high temperatures damage crops across Telangana.
The seasonal fruit, once affordable in rural markets, is now selling for ₹30 to ₹50 per fruit, depending on its size and quality.
Farmers report a sharp decline in fruit production this season. Trees that usually bear 50 to 60 fruits are producing fewer than 10 in some areas.
The shortage has reduced market arrivals and pushed prices higher. Consequently, many consumers are finding it difficult to afford the fruit.
Custard Apple Prices in Hyderabad | Poor Rains and Habitat Loss Reduce Custard Apple Supply
Custard apple production depends on rainfall, soil moisture and temperature during flowering and fruit formation. Flowering and fruit setting generally begin between July and August, with fruits reaching markets from September.
This season, inadequate rainfall and higher temperatures have damaged flowers and young fruits. Some flowers have withered, while several young fruits have fallen before reaching maturity.

The former Mahabubnagar district is a major collection region for custard apples. Areas around Achampet, Balmoor, Uppununthala, Lingala, Amrabad and Padara have traditionally supplied fruit to Hyderabad and other towns.
However, unfavourable weather has affected supplies from these regions. Monkey activity has also reportedly reduced fruit availability in some areas.
Natural habitat loss is creating additional pressure on production. Hill removal, quarrying, real estate projects and changes in land use have reduced areas where custard apple trees grow naturally.
The shortage is also affecting rural livelihoods. Many families depend on collecting wild custard apples and selling them during the season.
Women’s self-help groups that process the fruit for commercial use are also facing difficulties because of reduced supplies. Lower production means fewer opportunities for seasonal earnings.
Experts Call for More Custard Apple Plantations
Environmental and social observers have called for greater protection of natural custard apple habitats. They have also urged authorities to promote plantations on suitable government land, hillocks and community forest areas.

Planting more custard apple trees could help improve future availability while supporting rural employment. Officials could also consider encouraging cultivation through suitable employment and afforestation programmes.
The current shortage reflects the combined effects of unfavourable weather and declining natural tree cover. Unless these pressures ease, custard apples could remain expensive and less accessible to ordinary consumers.
