Election Schedule Released For Five States

  • Polling dates announced for Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam, Kerala and Puducherry

Hyderabad: The Election Commission of India has released the election schedule for four states and one Union Territory. The elections will take place in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam, Kerala, and the Union Territory of Puducherry. The announcement sets the stage for voting across 824 assembly seats.

According to the schedule, polling in Assam, Kerala and Puducherry will take place on April 9. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu will vote on April 23. West Bengal will have elections in two phases. The first phase will be held on April 23. The second phase will take place on April 29. The counting of votes for all four states and the Union Territory will be conducted on May 4.

The elections will cover 234 seats in Tamil Nadu. West Bengal will have voting in 294 assembly seats. Kerala will vote for 140 seats. Assam will hold elections for 126 seats. In Puducherry, polling will take place in 30 assembly seats. Therefore, a total of 824 seats will go to the polls in these elections.

Election Commission prepares for large scale voting

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said that about 17.4 crore voters will participate in the elections. Authorities will set up 2.19 lakh polling stations across the states and the Union Territory. Meanwhile, around 25 lakh election officials will take part in election duties.

Officials said preparations are already underway at multiple levels. The Election Commission has taken several steps to ensure the smooth conduct of voting. These steps include administrative planning and monitoring across the states where elections will be held.

Assembly terms ending soon in states and Puducherry

The elections are scheduled as the terms of the respective legislative assemblies are nearing completion. The terms of the assemblies in the four states and Puducherry will end on different dates in May and June. Therefore, the Election Commission announced the schedule ahead of time.

Meanwhile, the Commission has already carried out the Special Comprehensive Revision of the voters’ list. Officials also visited the concerned states earlier to review ground level conditions. These visits helped assess preparations and ensure that polling arrangements are ready.

The election process will now move forward according to the announced schedule. Voting will take place in April, while counting will be held on May 4. The results will decide the next governments in the four states and the Union Territory.
