Electricity Demand Surge Under ‘Gruha Jyothi’ Scheme
Hyderabad, Jan 5 (Maxim News): There are 10.5 lakh beneficiaries in 10 circles in the Greater Hyderabad area. Among them, lakhs of connection holders who used to consume less than 100 units of electricity per month have increased their electricity consumption to 140-160 units per month with the implementation of Gruha Jyoti.

Electricity demand has increased as some consumers in slums and colonies are consuming up to 180 units of electricity. In the month of March, when the Gruha Jyoti scheme was launched, 8.71 lakh beneficiaries in ten circles had zero bills, which increased to 10.52 lakh by December.
Among the ten circles in the greater area, Sangareddy Circle has the highest number of Gruhjyoti beneficiaries with 2.13 lakh, followed by Rajendranagar with 1.33 lakh, Habsiguda Circle with 1.28 lakh, and Medchal Circle with 1.15 lakh consumers. The lowest number of people receiving zero bills under Griha Jyoti is 36 thousand in Banjara Hills Circle, 68 thousand in Hyderabad Central, 70 thousand in Secunder, 73 thousand in Cyber City, and 98 thousand in Hyderabad South. In the circles with the highest number of Gruhjyoti beneficiaries, electricity demand increased by 15-20 percent in 2024 compared to 2023.

Electricity department officials say that 10 lakh electricity consumers in Greater Hyderabad are benefiting from the Gruha Jyoti scheme to the tune of Rs. 100 crore every month. The bill for 200 units per month is around Rs. 1150-1200. This includes energy charges, customer charges, electricity duty, and other charges.
Officials say that 94.71 lakh people have benefited from zero bills since the start of the Gruha Jyoti scheme till the end of November. The power department is estimating that the electricity demand is likely to increase further from February and March due to the Gruha Jyoti scheme. Keeping in mind the demand registered in the summer, the power department has set a target to complete the work undertaken as part of the Summer Action Plan by the first week of February.
