- Telangana ACB probes Rs 55 crore payment irregularities
Hyderabad, March 24: The Telangana Anti Corruption Bureau has filed a charge sheet in the Formula E case, naming BRS Working President K T Rama Rao as the prime accused. The case relates to alleged irregularities in payments linked to the Formula E race.
The charge sheet was filed in a court and includes senior IAS officer Arvind Kumar, former Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority chief engineer B L N Reddy, and two others. Authorities said the case involves payments of around Rs 55 crore, mostly in foreign currency.
Meanwhile, the investigation focuses on alleged violations of laid down procedures in making these payments. The funds were reportedly transferred for the Formula E race planned for 2024 during the previous BRS government. However, officials stated that the process did not follow required norms.
The Formula E race was held in Hyderabad in February 2023. Later, the second edition scheduled for 2024 was cancelled after the Congress government assumed office in December 2023. Therefore, the payments made for the proposed event came under scrutiny.
In December 2024, the ACB registered a case against K T Rama Rao, Arvind Kumar, and B L N Reddy. The charges include criminal misappropriation, breach of trust, and conspiracy under the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Indian Penal Code. The investigation then moved forward with required approvals.
The then Governor Jishnu Dev Varma granted sanction for the prosecution of Rama Rao in November last year. Meanwhile, the Centre approved the prosecution of Arvind Kumar last month. These approvals allowed the ACB to proceed with filing the charge sheet.
However, K T Rama Rao has denied all allegations in the Formula E case. He said the decision to transfer funds was taken to promote Hyderabad’s image. He maintained that there was no corruption involved in the process.
Rama Rao also stated that the money transferred by the government remains with the race organisers. He reiterated that no wrongdoing had taken place. The case is now before the court, and further legal proceedings are expected.
