Gandhinagar elections results LIVE Updates: BJP wins 41 seats
GMC elections LIVE news updates: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registered a landslide victory in the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC) elections, held Sunday, by winning 41 out of 44 seats on Tuesday. The Congress, on the other hand, was able to bag only two seats, while Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won one.
The post of the Mayor is reserved for the Schedule Caste community in GMC. All five SC seats were won by the BJP.
A total of 162 candidates were in the fray for the 44 seats across 11 wards in GMC. This time, the elections was a three-pronged contest with the entry of the AAP. While the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress fielded candidates on all 44 seats, the AAP had candidates in 40 seats. Other candidates in the fray included 14 from the BSP, two from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), six from other parties and 11 independents.
The Gujarat State Election Commission (SEC) authorities had said the polling remained largely peaceful without any untoward incident. According to estimated figures of the SEC, the polling witnessed around 56.24 per cent voter turnout.
Apart from GMC, the SEC had also conducted elections to two nagarpalikas–Tharad in Banaskantha and Okha in Devbhumi Dwarka–and mid-term elections to Bhanvad nagarpalika in Devbhumi Dwarka. The three nagarpalikas witnessed an estimated average of 59.52 per cent voting.
Ahmedabad and Jamnagar Municipal Corporation by-elections
There were by-election for two seats in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and one in the Jamnagar Municipal Corporation for which 10 candidates vied on Sunday. Three were affiliated with the BJP, three with Congress, two with AAP, one with NCP, and one with another party.
A total of 205 candidates (78 – BJP, 72 – Congress, 52 – AAP, 3 – Independents) were in the race for 78 seats in three municipalities – Thara, Okha and Bhanvad.
Candidates of the BJP were declared uncontested winners in 4 seats of Ward 3 of Thara and in 2 seats of Ward 8 of Okha municipality.
During the first two hours of counting that started at 9 am today, the BJP won 28 seats out of 36 in Okha, three out of 24 in Bhanvad and 20 out of 24 seats in Thara municipality.
While Okha and Bhanvad are located in Devbhumi-Dwarka district, Thara comes in the Banaskantha district.
The race for the eight seats in various district panchayats is contested by 24 candidates.
