GHMC Launches Anti-Begging Drive in Hyderabad, 221 Homeless Rehabilitated
Hyderabad, June 27, 2025 (Maxim News): In a concerted effort to make Hyderabad a beggar-free city, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has launched a special anti-begging drive, identifying and relocating 221 homeless individuals from major traffic junctions across the city.
The initiative, spearheaded by GHMC’s Urban Community Development (UCD) wing, involved comprehensive visits to key hotspots such as Basheerbagh, Nampally, Secretariat, and Begum Bazar, where officials engaged with homeless people found on pavements and intersections.

Out of the 221 identified, 19 individuals were moved to GHMC-operated night shelters, while the rest — many of whom had migrated to Hyderabad and taken to begging — were counseled and facilitated to return to their hometowns, according to an official release.
Focus on Rehabilitation, Not Penalization
The GHMC emphasized that the goal of the drive is not punitive but rehabilitative, aiming to provide safe shelter, support, and reintegration for the homeless population.
“The operation is part of our larger mission to make Hyderabad a cleaner, more inclusive city,” a GHMC official stated. “We’re also working in coordination with NGOs and shelter homes to ensure that those in need are given proper care, hygiene, and a safe space.”
The GHMC further announced that this anti-begging drive will continue in the coming weeks, focusing on other high-footfall areas of the city. The civic body has also appealed to citizens not to encourage begging at traffic signals, urging them instead to support shelters and government-run welfare programs.
This move aligns with Hyderabad’s broader urban development goals, including improved public space utilization and social inclusion through proactive governance.
