GHMC Negligence: Raja Singh Links Fire Mishaps

  • Raja Singh on construction violations and fire safety

Hyderabad: Goshamahal MLA T Raja Singh accused the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation of negligence and lack of seriousness in checking building construction violations. He linked repeated fire mishaps in the city to what he described as unchecked violations and poor follow up by civic authorities. He made these remarks while interacting with local media channels during a visit to Abids, where he inspected the site of a recent fire accident on Saturday night.

Raja Singh alleged that the GHMC focuses only on collecting money and not on enforcing rules after granting construction permission. He said several violations were visible in the building where the fire incident occurred. According to him, this pattern reflects a wider problem across the city. He claimed authorities approve buildings but later fail to ensure that builders follow safety norms. Therefore, he argued, such negligence puts lives at risk.

“The GHMC grants permission for construction. Afterwards they don’t check if the builder is following the guidelines or violating them. Because of it there are fire mishaps in the city,” said Raja Singh. He stressed that without strict monitoring, violations continue unchecked. He also suggested that the lack of inspections encourages builders to ignore safety standards, which later results in accidents.

Meanwhile, the MLA said responsibility does not lie with one department alone. He said both the GHMC and the fire department must act together. He stated that they should conduct meetings with apartment owners and shopkeepers to create awareness about fire safety measures. According to him, such engagement can help prevent future tragedies if done seriously and regularly.

“The government should take responsibility and take steps to prevent such unfortunate incidents in the future,” said MLA. He emphasised that authorities must move beyond routine procedures. He added that accountability and preventive steps are necessary to avoid repeat incidents. He linked recent fire accidents to systemic failures rather than isolated lapses.

Later, Raja Singh reiterated that public safety should be the priority of civic bodies. He said ignoring violations after issuing permissions weakens trust in governance. He also said enforcement should continue even after construction ends. He concluded that unless the GHMC changes its approach, fire mishaps will continue to threaten lives and property in Hyderabad.
