Hyderabad, March 31 (Maxim News): The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has ordered closure of all meat and beef shops on March 31, 2026.
The order applies across GHMC limits on the occasion of Mahaveer Jayanthi.
According to an official notice issued by the GHMC Commissioner, all cattle, sheep, and goat slaughterhouses must remain closed.
In addition, all retail meat and beef shops must also shut operations for the day.
Officials said the decision follows Resolution No 26 passed by the GHMC Standing Committee on September 24, 2025. The civic body issued the directive under Section 533(b) of the GHMC Act, 1955.
Closure order applies across GHMC limits
The GHMC asked the Hyderabad City Police Commissioner to ensure enforcement. Officials also directed veterinary department officers to coordinate implementation. The civic body said all zonal commissioners must monitor compliance.
The notice also went to the Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Department.
Authorities informed the Telangana State Sheep and Goat Development Cooperative Federation. Officials said coordination will help smooth enforcement.
GHMC said the closure forms part of routine observance on Mahaveer Jayanthi.
The festival marks the birth anniversary of Lord Mahaveer, an important figure in Jainism. Authorities usually impose such restrictions on designated religious occasions.
Officials asked concerned departments to extend cooperation. They said municipal teams will monitor slaughterhouses and retail outlets. They also warned of action against violations.
The civic body also asked its public relations wing to inform media organisations. Officials said public awareness helps better compliance. Therefore, GHMC issued advance notice.
The order will remain effective only for March 31, 2026. Normal operations may resume the following day unless further orders are issued.
