Graduate MLC Voter Registration | Hyderabad, Nov 2: Voter registration for the Warangal-Khammam-Nalgonda graduates’ MLC election has not picked up, with only five days left before the November 6 deadline. The election is due in March. Graduates in the three united districts have shown little interest in enrolling, according to the source.
The registration drive began more than 25 days ago and has not gone as planned. The source says the united districts have over 2.5 lakh graduate voters, but they are not coming forward to register.
Unemployed graduates are the most reluctant. The source says some past winners of graduate MLC seats ignored the constituency after winning, and that has kept jobless graduates away. Party workers who approach graduates are not getting their certificate details, so leaders are talking to them and collecting the details themselves. Leaders of teachers’ and employees’ unions are trying to enrol members through their unions.

Congress, BRS and BJP leaders are treating the contest as a prestige issue. They are also planning strategies for the Hyderabad-Ranga Reddy-Mahabubnagar graduates’ seat. Each party has appointed constituency, united-district and district in-charges and is holding programmes in the 12 Assembly constituencies of the region.

Congress is in power and is trying hard to win this time. It had announced its candidate early and appointed MLAs as constituency in-charges, along with other party leaders. Senior leaders have been put in charge at the mandal level, and the party’s top leadership is also watching the drive.

The BRS has appointed MLAs, MLCs, former ministers and former MLAs as in-charges, and its leaders are working down to the mandal level. BJP leaders are also making some effort. The parties are meeting unemployed associations, teachers’ and employees’ unions and activists, and are involving their affiliated groups.
Leaders believe a win would bring graduates’ support in future elections. They also feel they will get support only if they enrol large numbers. In the remaining five days, they are preparing for a big push.
