The convicts challenged the verdict before the High Court, seeking the cancellation of capital punishment or, alternatively, its commutation to life imprisonment.

Therefore, the court is examining both the legal and humanitarian aspects of the sentencing.

During the proceedings, a Division Bench passed significant directions concerning mitigation factors.

The court appointed two mitigation investigators to assess the convicts’ mental behaviour, health conditions, and expressions of remorse.

These investigators will interact with the prisoners inside jail and submit a detailed report.

The report will specifically address their psychological state, physical health, and scope for reformation.

High Court Focuses on Mitigation in Lumbini Park Gokul Chat Blasts Case

Meanwhile, the High Court rejected a plea by the convicts seeking transfer of the case to another bench.

The bench made it clear that the appeal would continue to be heard by the same judges. As a result, the legal process will proceed without any change in the forum.

The Lumbini Park Gokul Chat blasts case remains one of the most serious terror incidents in Hyderabad’s history.

The explosions occurred in crowded public spaces, causing widespread panic and loss of life.

Subsequently, investigations revealed the role of Indian Mujahideen terrorists in planning and executing the attacks.

However, despite convictions, some key accused in the case are still absconding.

Notably, prime suspects including Riyaz Bhatkal continue to evade arrest. Authorities have earlier stated that efforts to trace the absconders are ongoing.

The High Court’s current focus on mitigation reflects established legal principles in death penalty cases.

Courts are required to balance the gravity of the crime with the possibility of reform. Therefore, the findings of the mitigation investigators are expected to play a crucial role in the final outcome of the appeal. (Maxim News)
