Shillong, April 29: In a major twist in the sensational honeymoon murder case, a Shillong court granted bail to Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused in the murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi.
Sonam had remained in judicial custody for the past 10 months. She is expected to walk out of jail on Friday evening.
Earlier, the court rejected her bail pleas three times. However, this time the court accepted her petition after considering key developments in the case.
Honeymoon Murder Case Sees Fresh Turn
Police have already completed the investigation and filed a 790 page chargesheet before the court. Therefore, Sonam’s lawyers argued that custodial interrogation was no longer necessary.
They also told the court that she had cooperated with the investigation. In addition, reports said certain procedural lapses during her arrest also helped her case.
The court reportedly considered the long period she spent in jail before granting bail.
The case dates back to May 2025, when Sonam and Raja Raghuvanshi travelled to East Khasi Hills in Meghalaya for their honeymoon.
Soon after reaching Sohra, the couple went missing. Later, on June 2, police recovered Raja’s body from a deep gorge.
After that discovery, the missing case turned into a murder investigation.
Police alleged that Sonam conspired with her alleged lover Raj Kushwaha and three others to kill Raja. Investigators earlier claimed that Sonam admitted her role after police detained her in Uttar Pradesh.
Meanwhile, Raja Raghuvanshi’s family expressed shock over the bail order. They called the decision unfair and said they would move the Meghalaya High Court seeking cancellation of bail.
The remaining accused in the case continue to remain in jail.
The case had drawn nationwide attention because of its shocking nature and dramatic investigation.
