Child Marriage: 6 Arrested In Hyderabad

The 16-year-old victim, a resident of Teegalkunta under the Falaknuma police stations limits, was living with her aunt, Hoor Unnisa, after her mother died a few years ago.

Hyderabad: Child Marriage, Six persons who allegedly got a minor girl married to a 57-year-old man, that too forcibly, were arrested by the Falaknuma police on Thursday. The police rescued the victim while the elderly groom has gone absconding.

The 16-year-old victim, a resident of Teegalkunta under the Falaknuma police stations limits, was living with her aunt, Hoor Unnisa, after her mother died a few years ago. Her father had remarried and was living in another part of the city.

According to the police, earlier this month, Hoor Unnisa conspired along with her husband Mir Farhathullah and son Mir Rahmathullah to marry the girl off to some rich person, for which they sought the help of two brokers, Mohammed Abdul Rahman and Waseem Khan. They found a man from Kerala who was willing to marry a young girl from the city and the marriage was finalized, said Gajarao Bhupal, DCP (South).

On December 27, they took the girl to the office of Qazi Mohammed Badiuddin Quadri at Malakpet and solemnized the marriage, despite the girl resisting their attemps. The police were alerted by the step-brother of the girl, who approached the Falaknuma police, who formed special teams and arrested all the six persons, including Quadri, while the groom fled from the lodge he was staying before the police reached there.

The police, who initially registered a case under various sections of the Child Marriage Act 2006, have later added Sections 120 B, 376 (2) (I) (N) and 420 of IPC and also Section 5 (N) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
