The decline has triggered concern among health experts and environmental authorities as Hyderabad now records worse air quality than several other major metros.

As per the Air Quality Index, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 particles in multiple localities are three to four times higher than the permissible limits.

Officials said this marks a significant shift, as cities like Bengaluru and Chennai earlier reported higher pollution, while Hyderabad maintained relatively better air conditions.

Hyderabad air quality hotspots identified by Pollution Control Board

The Pollution Control Board has identified seven major air pollution hotspots in Hyderabad.

Sanathnagar continues to face heavy industrial emissions, while Panjagutta records persistent vehicular congestion. Uppal is affected by dust from large scale construction activity, and Charminar reports high emissions from dense traffic movement.

Jeedimetla remains vulnerable due to chemical industrial discharges, while Kukatpally Housing Board Colony and Malakpet are impacted by heavy traffic and frequent movement of commercial vehicles. Officials said pollution levels in some of these areas have reached hazardous levels.

Experts attribute the worsening Hyderabad air quality to rapid urban infrastructure expansion, rising vehicle numbers, and continuous construction activity.

Every year, lakhs of new vehicles enter city roads, increasing exhaust emissions. Flyover projects and real estate development have added large quantities of dust particles to the atmosphere.

Winter conditions have further intensified the problem, as lower air circulation traps pollutants closer to the ground.

Doctors report a rise in respiratory ailments, asthma, allergies, and eye related issues among residents. Children and elderly people are the most affected, health officials said.

Medical professionals have advised residents to limit outdoor exposure and use protective masks when pollution levels remain high.
