Hyderabad, December 17: The Hyderabad Congress protest has been announced following strong condemnation of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over an alleged hijab incident at a government function. The Hyderabad District Congress Committee reacted sharply and called the episode a serious violation of a woman’s dignity. The party also announced a public protest to highlight concerns over women’s rights and constitutional values.
Hyderabad District Congress Committee President Syed Khalid Saifullah addressed the media on Wednesday. He strongly condemned Nitish Kumar for allegedly pulling off a woman doctor’s hijab during a recent government function in Bihar. He described the incident as a “shameful and unconstitutional act” that insults women and violates their dignity. He also said the issue goes beyond politics and demands urgent accountability.
While speaking to reporters, Saifullah said the incident was not limited to poor behaviour. He said it was a direct attack on a woman’s right to privacy and freedom of choice. He pointed out that these rights are protected under Article 21 of the Indian Constitution. “This is not just about one religion or one community. This concerns every mother, every sister, and every daughter of our country. The Chief Minister’s actions represent a misuse of power and a dangerous breach of a woman’s personal space. Such conduct is against the values of our Constitution and humanity,” Saifullah said.
Meanwhile, the Hyderabad Congress leader demanded immediate action against Nitish Kumar. He urged the National Commission for Women to step in. “There must be accountability. Just making statements is not enough. If we remain silent today, such incidents will become normalised tomorrow,” he added. Therefore, the party said it would continue to raise the issue until proper action is taken.
Later, Saifullah announced that the Hyderabad Congress protest will take place on December 20 at 4 PM. He said the demonstration will be peaceful and conducted within the legal framework. The exact location will be decided after police permission. “Our protest is not against a political party but against the violation of a woman’s honour. This is not a political issue – it is an issue of humanity and respect. Hyderabad will not stay silent when a woman is humiliated in public by someone in power,” he said.
He also appealed to people across communities to join the protest. He said Hyderabad stands for women’s dignity and freedom. “We want the entire country to know that Hyderabad stands for women’s rights and freedom. No one has the right to insult a woman, no matter how high their position,” he said adding that the National Commission for Women should take suo motu cognisance of the matter.
