Hyderabad: Electricity Dept. Removes Dangerous Cables
Hyderabad, Aug 19 (Maxim News): Following a series of recent electrical accidents, the Telangana State Electricity Department has initiated a special drive to address public safety concerns within Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits.
Officials are taking corrective action to remove dangerously hanging cables and wires from electricity poles. The move comes after recent incidents in areas like Ramanthapur and Old Town Bandlaguda brought attention to the risk posed by poorly maintained electrical infrastructure.
The special drive is underway in various divisions, with a particular focus on areas such as Uppal, Ramanthapur, and Chilakanagar, where officials are working to ensure the safety of residents by removing hazardous wires. The department’s proactive measures aim to prevent future accidents and improve the reliability and safety of the city’s power supply network.
Hyderabad: Electricity Dept.: Telangana Govt Orders
It is to mention here that Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka has ordered an immediate and comprehensive “war footing” drive to remove all unauthorized cable wires from electric poles across the state.
The directive comes after a series of accidents, including the fatal incident on August 17 in Ramanthapur, where six people died. A chariot in a Janmashtami procession came into contact with a live overhead power line after an illegally placed cable wire fell onto it. A similar incident was also reported in Bandlaguda during the transportation of the Ganesh idol.
The Deputy Chief Minister, who also holds the energy portfolio, issued the orders during a high-level meeting at the Secretariat. He noted that despite a major clearance drive conducted on March 15 to remove old and unauthorized wires, many remain.
Adding to the danger, cables from major internet service providers like Airtel and Jio are often found attached to these old, unauthorized lines, creating significant safety risks for the public. This has been a recurring issue, with an earlier meeting in 2024 between the power department and service providers failing to yield any response. The Deputy CM has now called for urgent action to address the problem and prevent further loss of life. (Maxim News)
