Hyderabad Gears Up for Monsoon: GHMC Intensifies Dengue Prevention and Flood Control Measures
Hyderabad: With the monsoon season rapidly approaching, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and allied civic bodies have ramped up efforts to prevent urban flooding and curb the spread of mosquito-borne diseases like dengue. On Friday, May 16, GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan and Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi led crucial initiatives aimed at monsoon preparedness and public health safety.
Comprehensive Monsoon Strategy Unfolds Across the City
During a high-level review meeting at the GHMC headquarters, Commissioner RV Karnan urged all departments to function in close coordination to ensure seamless implementation of pre-monsoon preparations citywide. The meeting saw participation from GHMC engineering officials, zonal commissioners, and senior traffic police officers.
“Our goal is to ensure that citizens face no hardship during the rains,” said Karnan. He stressed the need to expedite the cleaning of stormwater drains and nalas across all zones. A zone-wise review focused on de-silting activities, identifying water-logging hotspots, and strengthening emergency response mechanisms.
Karnan instructed the formation of dedicated monsoon emergency teams equipped with mobile response vehicles, each marked with GHMC logos and emergency contact numbers. These details will also be shared with local police stations to improve inter-departmental coordination during crisis situations.
Key plans include enhancing the city’s command control centre, developing robust traffic diversion strategies, and ensuring 24/7 availability of engineering staff. Joint inspections with traffic police officials at vulnerable water-logging points are already underway.
A convergence meeting with other government departments is also in the pipeline to streamline operations. Karnan added that 70% of streetlight-related complaints have been addressed, and the procurement of essential equipment is ongoing following the ESL agreement signed on May 1.

Traffic Police Urge Swift Action and Preemptive Steps
Hyderabad Traffic Commissioner Joyal George raised concerns about waterlogged roads leading to traffic snarls and safety risks. He recommended that damaged roads be repaired urgently and highlighted the need to trim trees along major routes to prevent accidents.
In anticipation of power outages at key intersections, Joyal proposed the installation of backup batteries for traffic signals and the deployment of heavy-duty cranes to clear stalled vehicles. He also called for timely dissemination of weather alerts to aid traffic management.
The meeting was attended by several key officials, including zonal commissioners Hemant Keshav Patil, Anurag Jayanthi, Venkanna, Ravikiran, Apurv Chauhan, Hemant Sahadev Rao, and Chief Engineer Ratnakar.
Mayor Leads Dengue Awareness Drive
Coinciding with National Dengue Day, Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi led a massive public awareness rally from the Mandal Primary Health Centre in Banjara Hills. Organized jointly by the GHMC’s entomology wing and the health department, the event focused on sensitizing residents about dengue prevention.
The Mayor also conducted a door-to-door awareness campaign, urging citizens to eliminate stagnant water around their homes—primary breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Informative stickers were distributed, and public advisories were issued highlighting precautionary measures.
“Community cooperation is vital in the fight against dengue,” said the Mayor. “A clean environment is the first step toward a healthy community free from mosquito-borne diseases.”
The rally saw enthusiastic participation from colony residents, local leaders, health officials, and GHMC staff.
