Hyderabad Gun Licence Misuse | Hyderabad, Oct 20: The arrest of three men in Malakpet with deer meat has revived concern over the misuse of licensed weapons in Hyderabad. Police recovered a rifle and eight bullets from them. The men were allegedly caught carrying meat to Hyderabad after hunting deer in Karnataka.
According to the source, the inquiry found that a weapon obtained for self-protection was used for hunting. Police have not been quoted directly on this in the material supplied.
A similar case surfaced in the Malakpet police station area about a week ago. Some youths from wealthy families reportedly went hunting deer in forests near Shadnagar with licensed weapons held under the sports quota or for self-protection. Police acted on specific information and caught them.
Hyderabad Gun Licence Misuse at weddings, a suicide and calls for strict action
Weapon misuse is not limited to hunting. Recently, a man fired a licensed weapon into the air during a wedding procession in Chandrayangutta, which caused a stir. Police have begun an inquiry. In Hussainialam, a former Army officer died by suicide with his legally held weapon.
The series of incidents has started a debate on licensed weapon misuse. Questions are being raised on whether licences are taken for protection or for show. Some people are suspected of going to farmhouses and forest areas on “weekend hunting” trips to shoot deer, peacocks and rabbits. Demands have been raised to cancel the licences of violators and take strict action.
The source says the main challenge for police is to stop weapons taken for self-protection from being used for wildlife hunting or as status symbols.
