Hyderabad Metro Extra Coaches Coming Soon

Hyderabad, August 26: Hyderabad Metro Rail is planning to add extra coaches to trains to ease overcrowding on busy routes. The move aims to improve passenger comfort and increase carrying capacity during peak hours.

At present, heavy passenger demand often leaves little standing space inside trains. As a result, many commuters wait for the next service when a train reaches capacity. Additional coaches could help accommodate more passengers and reduce such waiting times.

DMRC Consultant Role and Coach Procurement Plans

Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited is considering the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation as a consultant for procuring additional metro coaches. DMRC has already submitted quotations for the proposed consultancy. Metro officials are examining the proposal and may approve it soon.

The consultant would provide technical support during the procurement process. This would include identifying domestic metro coach manufacturers and assessing their production capabilities. It would also help finalise technical specifications for the new coaches.

Meanwhile, HMRL has started its own efforts to identify manufacturers within India. Officials are also holding discussions with potential suppliers. If suitable companies come forward, the metro operator plans to procure coaches from them and add them to trains facing heavy passenger demand.

The additional coaches are expected to be introduced in phases. Initially, officials are focusing on trains operating on the LB Nagar to Miyapur and Nagole to Raidurg routes. These corridors currently see significant passenger demand.

After the first phase, officials plan to extend the additional coach facility to other trains based on passenger requirements. The move could provide commuters with more space and improve the overall travel experience.

The proposal also comes as Hyderabad Metro continues to examine ways to strengthen its existing network. Increasing train capacity could help the system handle growing ridership without relying only on higher service frequency.

Old City Metro Corridor Also Moves Ahead

Meanwhile, officials are also focusing on the proposed Old City Metro corridor between MGBS and Chandrayangutta. The planned corridor will cover about 7.5 kilometres.

The land acquisition process has reportedly reached its final stage. Once the process ends, officials are expected to invite tenders and begin construction activities.

DMRC is also working on technical aspects related to the tender process. These details are expected to be finalised within the next two weeks, according to the information provided.

In addition, the Telangana government is continuing the process of taking over the first phase of the Hyderabad Metro project. SBI Caps is overseeing the refinancing process linked to the proposed takeover.

The government is also working with the Centre to secure further support for the metro system. Together, the additional coaches, network expansion and proposed Old City corridor could strengthen Hyderabad’s public transport capacity.

However, the exact number of coaches, procurement timeline and commissioning schedule have not yet been officially announced. HMRL will need to complete the consultancy, procurement and technical approval processes before the new coaches enter passenger service.
