Hyderabad Metro Phase 2: Balancing Progress And Preservation

To preserve the city’s heritage, the government has committed to safeguarding 103 religious and sensitive structures, such as mosques and temples, along the route.  However, iconic establishments like Sajjad Sweets, a beloved spot in Darul Shifa known for its role in religious events, and Munshi Naan, a 173-year-old building housing a popular Kabab center, are set to be demolished. These places have become vital parts of the local community, making their loss particularly emotional.

A cheque distribution program was held on January 6 for property owners, with a total compensation fund of ₹1,000 crore earmarked for the 1,100 affected properties. Commercial tenants whose properties are more than 80% impacted will also be compensated.

The metro project also includes road widening along the route, with the main road expanding by 100 feet and the metro track itself by 120 feet. This is expected to improve traffic flow and ease congestion, benefiting the city’s growing population.

This new project highlights the government’s initiative to develop the transportation department of Telangana as the population increases rapidly. However, developing a metro phase in the old city leads to the ending of many old places of heritage with critical significance. In this process, many families and owners lose their homes and shops which have been their legacy and a place they have been in the majority of their life. Although compensation is provided for 41 property owners, it can’t bring back the time they have spent there. Not only do the shop owners lose their place and source of income but their loyal customers lose a place that has been with them for years as well. An old place, like the ones in the old city, holds a lot of significance so developing such areas can mean losing a huge historical part of Hyderabad’s history.  (Maxim News)
