Hyderabad: Restoration Of Mir Alam Mandi Gets Delayed
Hyderabad, Feb 5 (Maxim News): The restoration of Mir Alam Mandi, a historic 200-year-old vegetable market in Hyderabad’s Old City, has been delayed. The state government had entrusted the responsibility of restoring this iconic market to the Quli Qutb Shah Urban Development Authority (QQSUDA), with an allocated budget of Rs. 10.50 crore.

The restoration project officially began in April 2023, with an initial plan to complete it within 18 months. However, the progress has been slower than expected, with several interruptions. Official sources have stated that the delay is due to QQSUDA’s insufficient funds to pay contractors, which has led to a slowdown in the restoration works.
The project includes structural improvements to ensure the market’s long-term stability. As part of these efforts, the Mir Alam Mandi arch, also known as the “Kaman,” will be reinforced, considering the increase in traffic and population density in the area in the coming years. Other planned enhancements include the remodeling of the market’s stormwater drainage system. The installation of LED lighting, the restoration of roads, and the setup of a transformer for a reliable power supply.

Mir Alam Mandi, which spans over five acres, houses 43 shops and is home to around 300 vendors. This market, which reflects the rich cultural heritage of Hyderabad, once bustled with activity and remains an important part of the city’s history. The Municipal Administration & Urban Development (MAUD) officials had planned to restore the market to its original state while preserving its historical significance.
Despite the ongoing delays, the authorities remain dedicated to transforming the market and reviving it. However, with the funding issues and slow pace of progress, it is unclear when the restoration will be fully completed. The project, once finished, will not only preserve the historic value of Mir Alam Mandi but also upgrade its infrastructure to meet the demands of a modern city. (Maxim News)
