Hyderabad Police To Expand Drone Wing For Enhanced Surveillance And Traffic Management
Hyderabad, July 7 (Maxim News): The Hyderabad City Police are set to significantly expand their Drone Wing after witnessing successful results in crowd surveillance, protest monitoring, and traffic management during major public events and religious processions.
Currently equipped with only two drones, the Hyderabad police have decided to scale up operations by procuring more advanced UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles). These will be deployed to monitor large gatherings, processions, and traffic bottlenecks in real-time.
Drones Becoming Key Tool for Public Safety
Drones have played a critical role in managing law and order during high-density events like Hanuman Jayanthi, Bonalu, Milad-un-Nabi, Ganesh Visarjan, and Muharram.

“Drones offer a bird’s eye view that helps us track potential troublemakers who often hide in narrow lanes. The footage allows us to respond quickly and identify suspects trying to escape,” said an official from the Hyderabad Police IT Cell.
On Sunday, during the Muharram procession, six drones were deployed to monitor crowd flow and alert the ground teams to any suspicious activity. Teams were strategically stationed across the city to ensure uninterrupted aerial surveillance.
Each team consists of two trained officers—a drone operator and a ground assistant—who work closely with local supervisory officers to address real-time situations.
Expansion and Training Underway
Plans are underway to train additional personnel and procure high-tech drones with night vision and real-time data streaming. The Hyderabad Police aim to build a dedicated drone unit to support both the law & order and traffic police departments.
“We’ve seen excellent operational results. Drones help us reduce traffic jams, monitor protest marches, and ensure safety during festivals,” the official added.
The Traffic Wing will also begin deploying drones at major junctions and choke points to ease congestion and manage diversions proactively.
This technology-led surveillance initiative aligns with the police department’s smart policing mission and promises to transform urban safety, especially during high-risk and high-footfall events.
