Telangana Health Department Promotes ‘Friday Dry Day’ to Combat Dengue Surge, Warns of Seasonal Illness Spike

Hyderabad, July 7 (Maxim News): In light of the increasing risk of dengue and seasonal diseases, the Telangana Health Department has urged citizens across the state to observe ‘Friday Dry Day’—a weekly initiative to eliminate stagnant water in and around homes, offices, and public spaces.

With the arrival of monsoon, conditions are now ideal for the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes, the primary vector of dengue. The health authorities have called on the public to proactively prevent mosquito breeding by ensuring there is no water accumulation in containers, flower pots, air coolers, or any open receptacles.

Day-Biting Mosquito Alert

Dengue mosquitoes are active during the day, making it essential for households to keep doors and windows closed or screened, use mosquito repellents, and install nets over beds and cribs—especially for children and the elderly.

“By dedicating one day each week—Friday—as a ‘Dry Day’, communities can break the mosquito breeding cycle and drastically reduce the spread of dengue,” said Dr. B. Ravinder Nayak, Director of Public Health.

Rising Water-Borne & Air-Borne Illnesses

The Health Department has also reported a notable increase in water-borne diseases such as gastroenteritis, jaundice, and typhoid. Citizens are advised to:

  • Consume only boiled or treated water
  • Wash hands thoroughly before meals
  • Avoid stale or uncovered food

In addition, due to the rise in viral fevers and influenza, which spread through the air, people are encouraged to follow basic hygiene and respiratory etiquette:

  • Use handkerchiefs or tissues while sneezing/coughing
  • Avoid physical contact with sick individuals
  • Use hand sanitizers or wash hands regularly

Community Responsibility & Health First

The health authorities emphasized that community participation is crucial in preventing outbreaks. Schools, offices, apartment complexes, and municipal authorities are expected to join the weekly dry day movement and spread awareness on dengue prevention.

The Health Department also announced intensified surveillance and fogging drives in high-risk areas, along with door-to-door awareness campaigns across Telangana.

“Preventing mosquito breeding is not just the government’s responsibility—it begins at home. Let’s work together to make Telangana dengue-free,” Dr. Nayak concluded.
