Hyderabad, June 12 (Maxim News): Hyderabad Traffic Police handed out an average of 15,438 traffic challans daily in 2024, reflecting the city’s intensified crackdown on traffic violations. This data surfaced in response to a Right to Information (RTI) query by Hyderabad resident Lokender Singh, who sought detailed information on enforcement under the Hyderabad Commissionerate.
Of these daily fines, nearly 2,000 challans per day were generated using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, signaling the growing role of technology in streamlining traffic management and promoting road safety.
ANPR Cameras Transforming Traffic Policing
As of 2024, Hyderabad boasts 284 ANPR cameras, surpassing the initial plan of 260 units. These high-tech cameras are deployed at crucial junctions across the city’s Central, East, West, North, and South zones, covering hotspots like MJ Market, Jubilee Hills Check Post, Basheer Bagh, Khairatabad, and Paradise Circle.
- The West Zone leads with the highest concentration of ANPR cameras, effectively monitoring high-traffic areas like Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Panjagutta, and SR Nagar.
- In contrast, the South Zone lags with fewer installations in locations such as Chandrayangutta and Hussainialam.
These ANPR systems autonomously detect violations, including wrong-side driving, signal jumping, speeding, and stop-line breaches — enabling contactless, transparent enforcement with minimal human intervention.
Over 82% of Challans Paid in 2024
The Hyderabad Traffic Police reported a commendable 82.73% challan repayment rate in 2024. Out of 56.34 lakh challans issued across the city, violators paid over 46.61 lakh fines.
- Top complaint zones: Saifabad (98.9%), Begumpet (97.33%), and Narayanaguda (100.08%).
- Low compliance zones: Amberpet (28.29%), Langer House (26.29%), and Santosh Nagar (31.62%).
Authorities suggest that areas with lower repayment rates may require enhanced public awareness campaigns and stricter follow-ups to boost compliance.
A Tech-Driven Future for Hyderabad’s Roads
With the increasing adoption of smart surveillance tools like ANPR cameras, Hyderabad sets an example for data-driven, technology-powered traffic enforcement in India. The traffic police remain committed to improving road safety while ensuring fair and transparent practices.
