Hyderabad Water Crisis: Tanker Bookings Cross 7,000

Hyderabad Water Crisis | Hyderabad, Oct. 23: Water tanker bookings in Greater Hyderabad have crossed 7,000 per day, as residents struggle with shortages, falling groundwater levels and low-pressure supply.

Gated communities, residential colonies, slums and commercial buildings are increasingly depending on water tankers. The shortage has become particularly severe in parts of Hyderabad, Medchal and Rangareddy districts, where several borewells have reportedly dried up.

With permissions for digging new borewells restricted, many households have become more dependent on the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB). However, residents say inadequate supply and low pressure are forcing them to seek alternative sources.

Water tanker demand has risen sharply in recent days. Water board officials say bookings have remained above 7,000 daily since last week, an unusually high level for October.

Hyderabad Water Crisis Delays Tanker Deliveries

The growing demand has affected tanker delivery schedules, particularly in western Hyderabad and newly merged municipal areas. Residents reportedly wait two to three days after booking a tanker, with some facing delays of up to four days.

As a result, many households are turning to private tanker operators despite the additional expense.

Reports also suggest that some private operators are exploiting the shortage. According to the report, certain tanker owners allegedly contact customers briefly after bookings and sell the water elsewhere if customers do not respond. Tankers are reportedly being sold for Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 3,000 in parts of western Hyderabad.

Residents in several colonies and slum areas have also complained about low-pressure water supply. They allege that some apartments and affluent residential areas receive water for longer periods, while poorer neighbourhoods struggle to obtain adequate supplies.

Families whose borewells have dried up say the combination of low-pressure municipal supply and delayed tanker deliveries has worsened their difficulties.

The report also links falling groundwater levels to dry weather and El Niño-related conditions. However, the extent of El Niño’s contribution to the current shortage was not independently established in the report.

The water board is reportedly working to manage fluctuations in supply and address residents’ complaints. Officials are also seeking to prevent the diversion of tankers from their intended deliveries.
