HYDRAA Chief Inspects Drains, Lakes, And Encroachments In Hyderabad
Hyderabad, August 2, 2025 (Maxim News): As Hyderabad braces for peak monsoon activity, HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath has launched a city-wide inspection drive, reviewing stormwater drains, lakes, and road infrastructure in flood-prone areas including Borabanda, Allapur, Meerpet, Mansoorabad, Vanasthalipuram, and Gachibowli.
The initiative is part of a monsoon preparedness plan aimed at tackling urban flooding, removing illegal encroachments, and improving water flow and road access across key localities.
Sunnam Cheruvu Development in Focus
At Borabanda and Allapur, Commissioner Ranganath visited Sunnam Cheruvu, where sewage diversion and stormwater drain widening works are underway. He directed officials to separate sewage from stormwater flow and accelerate the drain expansion to mitigate flood risks.
Residents raised concerns about illegal sheds built over drains near Padmavati Nagar. The Commissioner responded promptly, assuring demolition of encroachments and further road widening, especially near the high-tension line road.
“A clean lake and functional drainage system are essential for a healthier Hyderabad,” Ranganath stated, while local corporators Baba Fasiuddin and Sabiha Begum appealed for swift execution of the planned works.
NGO Colony and Vanasthalipuram Drainage Works
In Gachibowli’s NGO Colony, the Commissioner inspected Moosayikunta and Gosayikunta lakes, where he called for full restoration based on verified records.

At Chintalakunta in Vanasthalipuram, he examined the ongoing underground drainage (UGD) work beneath the national highway. Officials reported 70% completion, while residents expressed concern over past flooding caused by undersized drains.
Ranganath emphasized that finishing the UGD project is vital to avoid highway waterlogging during heavy rainfall.
Illegal Road Encroachments in Mansoorabad
In Vivekanandanagar, Mansoorabad, Commissioner Ranganath discovered unauthorized constructions along designated roads. He ordered a detailed probe into the encroachments, promising corrective action to reclaim public land and improve access.
Drain Clearing and Expansion in Meerpet
In Meerpet, Ranganath inspected a key stormwater drain connecting Badangipet main road to Meerpet Peddacheruvu, where illegal construction by a local function hall had earlier obstructed water flow.
Following initial coordination, the HYDRAA wing began drain expansion, aiming for a 4-meter-wide waterway with a 2-meter buffer on either side for safety and maintenance.
Drone Survey to Safeguard Bandlaguda and Jalapally Lakes
At Bandlaguda and Jalapally, Ranganath visited Peddacheruvu and Hunda Sagar lakes, where residents raised alarms over rampant encroachments and land grabbing.
To address these concerns, the Commissioner ordered drone-based surveys to establish the lakes’ official boundaries. He instructed officials to use village records, NRSC satellite data, and Survey of India maps to identify Full Tank Levels (FTL) and take action against illegal land use.
Strengthening Hyderabad’s Urban Resilience
Commissioner Ranganath’s detailed inspections underscore HYDRAA’s renewed commitment to:
- Strengthening flood control infrastructure,
- Clearing critical drainage networks,
- Preserving Hyderabad’s lakes, and
- Cracking down on encroachments threatening public safety.
“We are focused on creating a flood-resilient and environmentally sustainable city. These proactive inspections are a step toward protecting both infrastructure and citizen well-being during monsoons,” Ranganath said.
